ARTIST STATEMENT

I create bold, visually-arrestin~, thought-provoking paintings through my choice of subject and stylistic use of vivld, highly-charged color. I create both big and small scale works and my pain~ings are included in the collections of the National Arts club and private individuals. My greatest influences are Grant wood, Balthus, Morandi,' Giacometti, and soutine, to name a few.
The narratives depicted in my paintin~s reflect my travels around the world, my . life-lon~ interest in history and polltics,my fascination with the female form, and myobservatlons on the artworld. several of my paintin~s depict the people of different cultures I met on my travels and my experience of dlverse environments. others, reflect my interest in alternative histories and what might have happened if different candidates won past presidential elections. My works incorporate symbols, dream imagery, and photographic images.
I start my work by creating a list of potential subjects, titles, and drawing black and white thumbnail images. After I have selected one of these images, I enlarge it to 8 1/2 x 11" by freehand or using a photocopier, and start adding color to the image. Then I take tracing paper and copy the work, adding more detail to the tracing and adapting the colors as needed. Once I have finished my color sketch, I use a projector to enlarge the image and draw it onto the canvas with pencil. AS I work on the canvas with oil paints, brushwork and palette-knife, I add more details and finetune the colors, perfectin~ the image. In the end, my paintings tend to narrative quality and a collage-llke effect in how I layer penetrating, bold colors with symbolic and realistic images.
